Canadian Tire's Tyler Elm, VP of Business Sustainability, named to Canada's "Clean50"

TORONTO, Sept. 19, 2011 /CNW/ - Canadian Tire Corporation (CTC, CTC.a) is proud to announce that Tyler Elm, the Company's Vice President of Business Sustainability, has been selected by Delta Management Group as one of Canada's Clean50, a collection of 50 individuals or small teams who have made the greatest impact on Canada's long-term sustainability and contributed the most to clean capitalism in this country over the past few years.

Tyler has a distinguished career with a focus on sustainability, and currently leads Canadian Tire's Business Sustainability team in implementing a sustainability strategy that complements the Corporation's strategic priorities, including increasing business and environmental performance.

Since 2008, Tyler has transformed Canadian Tire's approach to Sustainability into an innovation strategy that generates competitive advantage and bottom-line results. Since 2010, the strategy has delivered 670 projects in key areas (Products, Transport, Buildings & Operations), that are forecasted to annually avoid $9,221,674 in costs, 11,811 tonnes of GHG emissions and 2,285 tonnes of waste. Canadian Tire's sustainability performance is integrated into core financial documents, reported with the quarterly financial releases and linked to management compensation.

"Being named to the Clean50 is a well-deserved honour and we congratulate Tyler on his latest achievement," said Stephen Wetmore, President and CEO, Canadian Tire Corporation. "Tyler came to Canadian Tire to transform the Company's approach to sustainability, and under his leadership, business sustainability at CTC is now a strategic framework for innovation, growth and organizational enhancement."

Canadian Tire's strategy promotes the use of low-carbon energy, energy efficiency and material efficiency, reducing waste and GHGs. Tyler has been a keynote speaker at global conferences on sustainability, a member on various sustainability boards, invited to speak at business management schools, and frequently interviewed and profiled in newspaper articles, books, case studies, and blogs.

"I am honoured to be a recipient of this award and thank Delta Management for recognizing the work and achievements to-date," said Elm. "I have been very pleased with the progress we have made at Canadian Tire in a relatively short time and look forward to continuing the work we've started."

Over 300 nominations were received and the results of the national search will be published in a special supplement by Corporate Knights.
