Shedding light on the environment
Canadian Tire to plant a tree for every package of Blue Planet Covered CFL Bulbs soldTORONTO, Oct. 3 /CNW/ - Saving money while helping the environment just got a whole lot easier with the launch of Canadian Tire's 'Buy a Bulb, Plant a Tree Campaign'. From now until October 24, 2008, Canadian Tire and Tree Canada will plant a tree for every two pack of Blue Planet Covered CFL bulbs sold. The Blue Planet Covered CFL bulb is an innovative new CFL bulb that looks just like a regular light bulb but uses 75 per cent less energy and lasts six times as long as a traditional incandescent bulb. In addition, it also contains less mercury and fits in most fixtures. Taking place at Canadian Tire stores across the country, the 'Buy a Bulb, Plant a Tree Campaign' enables customers to purchase an innovative, new energy-saving bulb for their home and for every two pack of Blue Planet Covered CFL bulbs sold, Tree Canada will plant a tree where it is most needed. "Together with our customers, we are part of the solution for creating a sustainable environment," says Reg McLay, senior vice president, Canadian Tire. "This partnership with Tree Canada not only offers customers eco-friendly solutions for their home, but also allows Canadian Tire to give back to the communities across Canada through the planting of trees." "We are excited to partner with a Canadian organization who shares our desire to help sustainable forestry," said Michael Rosen, president of Tree Canada. "With stores all across the country, Canadian Tire can effectively reach Canadians and encourage them to take part in this initiative." The partnership with Tree Canada is just one of the many ways Canadian Tire is helping to make a positive impact on the environment. A wide variety of energy-efficient changes have been integrated into Canadian Tire stores including more efficient lighting, heating, cooling and waste management features, resulting in stores that are 30 per cent more energy-efficient than stores built six years ago. In addition to making improvements on an operational level in current and future stores, the introduction of the Blue Planet line of eco-friendly products, has Canadian Tire offering customers eco-friendly alternatives to the many items used everyday in the home. The exclusive lineup of products includes an assortment of environmentally-friendly household cleaners, CFL bulbs and other innovative green items." "From CFL bulbs and eco-friendly lawn care products to solar panels, reusable shopping bags and green household cleaners, we want to make smart environmental products available to our customers," says McLay. "The Blue Planet line provides customers with eco-friendly options for everyday items, which not only helps customers to make smart environmental choices, but also helps them to save money on utility bills."
